About This Trip
The Peloponnese Grand Tour is Greece's most complete road trip, a single loop that packs five millennia of history, a Byzantine ghost city, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, Venetian fortresses, and the wild stone-tower villages of the Mani into one unforgettable week.
The roads are excellent throughout. The E55 and E65 motorways connect Athens to the peninsula quickly, and from there you wind through olive-clad valleys and mountain passes to reach sites that defined Western civilization.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Athens → Nafplio (2 nights)
Drive: 150 km · ~1h 45min
- Day 1: Arrive, climb Palamidi Fortress (8€), explore the old town
- Day 2: Morning at Mycenae (12€), afternoon boat to Bourtzi Castle (3€), swim at Tolo beach
Nafplio → Olympia (1 night)
Drive: ~200 km · ~3h via inland road through Arcadia
- Option: stop at Ancient Corinth en route (8€)
- Afternoon: Ancient Olympia archaeological site (12€), the original stadium and Temple of Zeus
- Evening: Olympia Archaeological Museum (6€)
Olympia → Sparta / Mystras (1 night)
Drive: 145 km · ~2h via mountain roads
- Morning: drive through the Arcadian highlands, some of Greece's finest scenery
- Afternoon: Mystras Byzantine City (12€), entire Byzantine city frozen in time on a hill
- Spare hour: the Leonidas Monument in Sparta town centre (free)
Sparta → Kalamata (2 nights) + Mani day trip
Drive: 65 km to Kalamata, then day trips south
- Day 5: Drive south into the Mani, Vathia stone tower village, Diros Caves (14€), Gytheion harbour
- Day 6: Voidokilia Beach (one of Greece's finest), Stoupa, Kardamyli village
- Day 7: Kalamata market, buy Kalamata olives and olive oil, return drive to Athens (3h) or fly home from Kalamata Airport

- Mystras gets very hot in summer, start before 9am and bring water.
- Voidokilia is a 15-min walk from the nearest car park, arrive early in July/August.
- The road from Sparta to Areopolis (into the Mani) is narrow in sections, drive carefully.
- Kalamata Airport has direct seasonal flights to many European cities, making it a natural end point.
- Kalamata olives from the central market are significantly better (and cheaper) than airport shops.
