About This Trip
Northern Greece is the country's best-kept secret. Away from the island crowds, this route takes you through Macedonia's lake towns, the dramatic Epirus mountains, and ends at Meteora, where Byzantine monks built monasteries on top of vertical rock pillars that rise 400 metres from the Thessaly plain.
Ioannina is Greece's most underrated city: an Ottoman-era lakeside capital with a castle, island, and the best baklava in the country. The nearby Vikos Gorge is the world's deepest canyon relative to its width, a day trip that most tourists entirely miss.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Thessaloniki → Kastoria (1 night)
Drive: 220 km · ~2h 30min
- Take the E86 west through Macedonia's rolling hills
- Kastoria: walk the peninsula around the lake, visit Byzantine Museum (4€) with its extraordinary frescoes
- Dinner: fresh lake fish at a waterfront taverna, eel and carp are the local specialities
Kastoria → Ioannina (2 nights)
Drive: 165 km · ~2h via Kozani
- Day 2: Arrive Ioannina, explore the Ioannina Castle & Old City (free), take the rowboat to Ali Pasha's island (3€) and the Ottoman mosque where he was assassinated
- Day 3: Day trip to Vikos Gorge, drive to Monodendri village (55 km), walk the rim trail for views into the world's deepest gorge. Continue to Papigo stone village for lunch
Ioannina → Meteora (1 night)
Drive: 170 km · ~2h 15min
- Day 4: Drive to Meteora via the Pindus mountain pass, spectacular scenery. Afternoon: Great Meteoron Monastery (3€) and Varlaam (3€)
- Day 5: Sunrise visit to Roussanou Monastery before crowds arrive, then drive to Thessaloniki (3h) or continue to Athens (3.5h)

- Meteora monasteries: strict dress code, no shorts, women must wear long skirts (often lent at the entrance).
- Most Meteora monasteries are closed on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, check individual schedules.
- The Vikos Gorge rim trail is easy walking, no technical hiking equipment needed. Good shoes and water.
- Ioannina baklava: the gold standard is at Stoa Louli near the castle gate, try the pistachio version.
- Driving the Katara Pass (between Ioannina and Meteora) can be icy in early spring, check conditions.
